Help
In the past, when we encountered a challenge, we would usually seek help from others. However, I believe that this scenario has shifted significantly in recent years.
In the name of independence, toughness, courage, and strength, we are becoming too proud to ask for help.
I have encountered people who say things like, “I can handle this on my own”, “I don’t share my problems with anyone”, and “These are personal matters”. This is a misconception.
It is important to remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of strength and courage.
If you are not understanding lessons, ask your classmates for help.
If you are not able to solve a question, ask your teachers for help.
If you find it difficult to accomplish a task in your workplace, ask your colleagues for help.
If you have a lot of household chores to do, and feel overwhelmed, ask your family members, siblings, partners or maids for help.
If you are struggling emotionally, talk to your friends.
If you are feeling blue, and it is affecting your daily life, ask a professional for help.
If you are struggling with something, please do not hesitate to ask for help.
Why people hesitate to ask for help:
People hesitate to seek help because they fear they might come across weak, they might get judged or get rejected or come across as a burden.
Specifically speaking, people hesitate to seek help for the following reasons:
Fear of being perceived as weak or incompetent.
Fear of being judged or rejected.
Fear of being a burden.
Fear of coming across as vulnerable.
Pride
Low self esteem.
Fear of being misunderstood.
The time has come to alter this perception. Experts agree that asking for help is essential. It enables us to be vulnerable, authentic, empathetic and allows us to connect with others.
It builds positive social relationships. Needless to say, it helps solve problems.
In a world that values assertiveness and independence, it is important to remember the value of humility and inquiry.
Asking for help is a sign of strength and self-awareness. It allows us to leverage the wisdom and expertise of others to achieve our goals.
Asking for help in the workplace:
When you seek help in the workplace, it demonstrates your willingness to learn, grow and collaborate. When you ask for help, you open yourself up to new perspectives and ideas.
You also exhibit that you trust your colleagues and are willing to accept their support.
According to Forbes, asking for help can lead to better results, stronger leaders and a better workplace environment. This can aid in better decision- making, increased productivity, and a more positive work experience for everyone involved.
The absence of ego allows for open communication, honest feedback, and collective growth, fostering a healthy and productive environment.
Asking for help is a skill:
Reaching out can be met with rejections, but it is important to remember that this is not a reflection of your worth. There are so many reasons why someone might not be able or willing to help, and it is important to respect their boundaries.
When seeking assistance, it is essential to consider the appropriateness and scope of the request, as well as the availability and resources of those who are being asked to help. We should not let rejections define us.
It is important to be considerate of the limitations of others. We should not abuse their kindness or presume upon their willingness to help.
If you feel you are not okay and need professional help, seek it.
Let us create a culture of openness and support. Let us also be generous in our willingness to help others when needed.
Take care everyone!
